Helen Shepherd, Chair
Helen is retired, but is a working volunteer in Mammoth. Shortly after her graduation from Miami University with a Bachelor of Science in Business with accounting honors, Helen was invited to work for Deloitte & Touche (a successor to Touche Ross & Co.). She began her career as a staff assistant and after gaining both technical and management skills, worked her way to a position as Audit Partner. She was entrusted with major audit responsibilities and had extensive Securities and Exchange Commission experience.

Later, as the Chief Deputy State Controller for California, she was responsible for the work product of the department of 1,200 employees. Helen was instrumental in taking the State from delinquency in reporting timelines to earning a certificate of achievement from the Government Finance Officers Association for the State’s efficient financial reporting. Helen’s strengths lie in her abilities to use experience and tact to make the best of less inopportune situations. Due to her high level of proficiency, employers have relied on her to establish personnel infrastructures and policies for development, as well as analyzing financial matters.
Helen’s passion for skiing and the community of Mammoth Lakes brought her to become a member of the Board of Directors in 2004 for the Southern Mono Healthcare District (SMHD). Since then, Helen has been the backbone of the financial development at Mammoth Hospital. Helen has been said to be “very supportive” of the financial departments and infrastructure development. She understands the language of finance and has been a comrade to management on all financial fronts. She raised the level of finance awareness to all senior management and has been a critical component to the financial success of Mammoth Hospital.
